After our expensive (although must less expensive than Australia) shopping trip at "The Source" we had time for a quick coffee and a bite to eat before heading back to the rink for the official Opening Ceremony. We were glad we got there early as the stadium was packed. Boy do the Canadians do it in style!!!
Red carpet on the ice. A compare from the Abbotsford Heat, the local professional AHL team. A bag piper, flag bearers and the Canadian Mounted Police. The teams were called in behind their team sign one by one to music, flashing lights and dry ice smoke.
SA Kangaroos were the second team to be called in and to parade around the rink. The crowd cheered as each team paraded past them and over to the far side of the rink to stand in their final positions.
There were speeches from a Stanley Cup winning former NHL player, Mr Ryan Walter, the local Mayor, the Aldergrove Ice Hockey President, the Tournament Director, Lyall Sharman, and there was an official welcome to country by local tribal elders who also say their tribal honor song.
Tournament Founder, Mr Kanieri also spoke before the two Friendship Games banners were raised. The original banner was hand sewed by Mrs Kanieri.
Next we were treated to a local singer, and former Friendshiper, performing the Canadian National Anthem to largely conclude the ceremony. All that remained was closing remarks and final photos. It was wonderful to recognise all the players and officials that had travelled such a long way to come and compete under the motto of the Friendship Games - Friendship. Fun. Fighting Spirit.
