In what was a big day the team had its second game of the day against the Aldergrove Bruins. Apparently, Connor had made the big call at the breakfast table that they were going to beat Jake's team. Everyone thought that was a big statement. Turns out Connor meant on the overall tournament standings as Aldergrove had received more penalties than the Kangaroos.
It was really cool at the beginning of the game to see the Kodiak Bear mascot wandering around the rink wearing a Kangaroos jersey. To be fair to both teams she was also draped in the Canadian flag.
After exchanging gifts the game got off to a great start. Connor was fortunate to begin the game in the starting five players. It was a strongly contested game with both teams readily scoring. The game was played in great spirit.
It was fun watching the game with our host family. With Jan, our host Dad cheering on our team with an Aussie flag. Connor and Jake, #17, were obviously enjoying battling each other on the ice. In this exchange you can see Connor smiling as he approaches Jake, but I'm assuming Jake got the better of him because its Jake who has the smile on his face at the end of the skirmish.
It was a fantastic game. Right near the end Matt Gaskin, one of our alternate captains, even had a penality shot. He skated hard down the ice and tapped in a beautiful backhander.
The final score of the game was 10-7 with a victory to the Kangaroos. The kids celebrated as it meant a lot to them to win against a Canadian team. Before the tournament we were not sure if the team would win one game so to beat the hosts was incredible; we are aware that had this been checking hockey the outcome would likeey have been very different. After the game was over, though all competition was left on the ice with Connor, Josh and Jake all happily posing together.
