This evening Michelle and Jan kindly offered to have Ryan and Cassie at their house so that David, Sue, Glen and I could attend the Friendship Games auction. This event is held at each games as a fundraiser for the next one. Each team attending donates items to be auctioned. The Kangaroos donated a hockey stick hand painted by an Aboriginal artist and a signed Adelaide Adrenaline jersey.
The evening opened with some music played by the Japanese contingent on a traditional Japanese musical instrument, the kato. It was so beautiful. We also all sang together - Its a Small World - us in English and our friends in Japanese.
The items auctioned ranged from jerseys, signed hockey cards, pucks, and sticks, Vancouver Canucks off ice wear, traditional Japanese ceramics, Korean sculptures, NASCAR merchandise, Aboriginal paintings, a hockey fleece blanket embroidered with the flags of the participating countries, saki sets, fishing kits, golf sets, a hand made Friendship Games quilt, NFL clothing, Kimonos, Maori artefacts, jewellery, alcohol, a trumpet player to play at your next hockey game, and the list goes on. The bidding early on the evening started off slowly but as the alcohol flowed so did the prices paid.
We bid on a signed Chicago Blackhawks card, an NFL jersey and a commemorative Friendship Games jersey but unfortunately were unsuccessful on them. The prices people paid for some of the items were unbelievable. We had a great time mixing with other parents and supporters. The night was a huge success raising over $18000 without alcohol sales. Yet another very late night, with an early start to follow tomorrow morning.
