Treasure Hunting

Friday April 5th 2013

This morning we decided it was time to embark on our Double Key Treasure Hunt. A hession sack with artefacts and clues had been delivered to our hotel and we would need to go to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, American History Museum and the American Natural History Museums to gather our answers and then ultimately receive our treasure.

First though we had to have breakfast. After the dinner at the hotel last night we were not keen to repeat the exercise by eating breakfast here....so much so we chose to go to McDonalds. Boy do we all want some good food.

When we had finished breakfast we made the short walk to the Air & Space Museum. We quickly found the answers to our clues and then enjoyed exploring many areas including the Space Race, the Skylab Orbital Workshop, Exploring the Universe, the Wright Brothers, Great War in the Air, World War II Aviation, Sea-Air Operations. We also watched an Air Racing movie about racing old World War II planes on the IMAX before making our purchases at the store. These included model planes, pins, and space food - freeze dried icecream, cookies and strawberries. We can't wait to try the food later tonight.

With our shopping complete we left the Air & Space Museum and began to search for somewhere to have lunch. If you want to have a sit down meal that's no easy feat in Washington D.C. as most food seems to be from street vendors. Eventually we found Ruby Tuesdays up near the main sports arena on 7th Street. It was a welcome sight. The food was largely American Southern Cuisine. Our meals included spicy crab bites, New Orleans seafood, steak and chicken and of course plenty of cajun spices. It was delicious.

Next stop was the sculpture garden on the way to the American History Museum. Ryan had been keen for the past couple of days to have his photo near a pyramid sculpture.

Once we arrived at the American History Museum we sought answers to more clues from our Treasure Hunt. Some where much harder than others to answer but with Connor's keen eyes we got there in the end. Getting to see the original Star Spangled Banner was fantastic and the boys really enjoyed having their turn to be the US President. The Civil War and transport exhibits were also very interesting.

As everyone was getting tired and had sore feet we decided to leave the American Natural History Museum and the remaining clues until tomorrow. Instead we made out way back down The Mall to the hotel for a well earned rest. We would then have dinner and an early night before completing our adventure on our final day in Washington D.C. tomorrow morning.
